Killing Floor: Calamity is a top-down shooter based on the first-person shooter Killing Floor. It takes place in the cities and countryside of England that have been devastated following a series of military cloning experiments gone wrong. The player controls one of the survivors who needs to fight hordes of Zeds. There are 35 different weapons to collect and they can be leveled up by killing enemies with them. It is also possible to lock on to enemies so the character can still move around while keeping an enemy in sight. Reloading is done automatically when a magazine is empty. Next to melee weapons such as an axe and ranged weapons such as pistols, shotguns, rifles, and RPGs, grenades can be used in crowded fights and a sentry gun can be deployed. Wounds are healed with syringes to restore health and there is also a medic gun. A separate button is used to dodge incoming attacks.
There are ten types of enemies (Clot, Gorefast, Scrake, Siren, Crawler, Stalker, Bloat, Husk, Fleshpound and the Patriarch) all familiar to players of the original game. The game can be played in cooperative local multiplayer. The characters can heal each other and toss weapons or money to help. During missions money collected along the way can be spent at field shops. It offers primary and sidearms weapons, ammo, armour and additional gear. Many items are found on the field as well. Certain weapons types are locked until they are dropped by enemies.
The game includes nine maps with different difficulty levels and the option to alter the game length as the game sessions are designed as survival mode arenas where a certain amount of waves and kills need to be completed. There are 21 characters to choose from taken from the PC version. They have access to seven perks such as berserker, demolition and firebug and that can be upgraded to level 20 with additional weapon unlocks. Actions unique to a perk are activated through a separate button. There is a tutorial where all the mechanics can be practiced.
